一、正确理解（understand exactly）

　　For over half a century it has proved that almost impossible to achieve any broad measure of agreement on a defination of democracy.

　　译文：半个多世纪证明，要就民主定义的广泛实施取得一致意见几乎是不可能的。

　　正确理解这个句子的过程中，就要总结一些习语。这样可以更好地理解句子。

例如：

　　go to the country 解散的意思

　　the apple of one’s eyes 掌上明珠

　　to pull one’s leg 开某人的玩笑

　　to make small talk 闲聊

　　to call names 辱骂某人

二、妥帖表达（express properly）

　　Brown is as poor as a church mouse（家贫穷）。

三、细致校核（proofread properly）

　　（1）My clothes are a witness to my property.

　　翻译：我的穿着证明了我的贫穷。

　　The sight of the teengers smoking jars on me.一看到年轻人吸烟，我就恼火。

　　As a matter of fact, both the police and murderer are after him.

　　翻译：其实不光警察在追捕他，刺客也在追杀他。
